Port Adelaide is home to one of South Australia's most significant maritime treasures - the Port Adelaide Ships Graveyard.
Dispersed over five sites, in quiet backwaters of the Port River, are the remains of a varied group of sailing, steam, motor and service vessels which ended their working live in Port Adelaide and were deliberately sunk, scuttled or beached in the Graveyard.
The Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary was established in 2005 to protect the resident population of Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) in the Port River and the habitat they rely on.
There are around 30 resident Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins within the sanctuary, with approx. 400 transient dolphins that visit at various times. These dolphins are wild animals and come here to eat, play, socialise and live.
Port Adelaide is home to a 10,000-year-old mangrove forest which, along with extensive areas of salt marsh form one part of the many different ecological environments of the Port River. The mangrove forest surrounds and encompasses areas of the Ships Graveyard and Garden Island and the Barker Inlet.
Additional ecological environments along the river include: Aquatic Zone of sand, soft sediments and some seagrasses; Shellfish Reefs; and additional Intertidal Zones such as mudflats and samphire flats.
The Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary National Park - Winaityinaityi Pangkara - is part of a 60km International Bird Sanctuary. Its Kaurna name means 'a country for all birds and the country that surrounds these birds', and it is home to 263 unique fauna and flora species.
In particular the Bird Sanctuary helps protect resident and migratory shorebirds, including threatened species such as Curlew Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, Red Knot and Eastern Curley.
